Press release: Cambodia eyes rice supply deal with Phillippines
On 1-3 February 2023, to expand the rice market, a delegation from the Ministry of Commerce led by H.E. Kim Srey Roth, Undersecretary of State of the Ministry of Commerce, H.E. Chan Sok Ty, Delegate of the Royal Government of Cambodia in charge and Chief Executive of the Green Trade Company, and Okhna Chan Sokkheang president of the Cambodia Rice Federation (CRF) and other eight members has attended the meeting and study the rice market in the Phillippines with the coordination of Okhna Van Sou Ieng, Advisor to the Cambodian Rice Federation (CRF).
In this market meeting and study visit, the Cambodian delegation met with Secretary H.E. Alfredo Pascual, Minister of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), H.E. Dr. Emmie Liza Perez-chiong, President of the International Trade Corporation of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) of the Philippines and stakeholders on rice imports. The two sides agreed to study the possibility of re-signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the rice trade through a government-to-government mechanism, which is expected to be signed soon. At the same time, the Philippine side also allows free trade in rice under the private and direct image, according to the quantity, quality, and price agreed between the two sides. In 2022, the Philippines imported 3.82 million tons of rice from countries, most of which were plain white rice.
Philippine rice importers will visit Cambodian rice mills directly to increase trust and better relationships, which will be held during the first round of dry season rice harvest in late February or early March 2023. During the study visit, a sales contract may be signed.
